Thoughts on English This Year

As one of you described so insightfully in your response to the last blog posting, an ideal school is one in which the teachers learn from the students just as much as the other way around. And in reading your thoughts and ideas about how to improve high school, I can honestly say I learned a lot from your comments. Overall, you shared your observations that school bogs students down with petty rules and wasted time, from teachers who do not control their classes to having to take courses that you feel will not benefit you after you leave the walls of Abington Senior High. And overall, I found your comments genuine and thoughtful. I think that the adult population of our school could learn a lot from your comments here, as I have.

In the spirit of expressing ourselves in order to learn more about things we all take for granted, like the daily routine of school life, this blog posting focuses specifically on your experience in this English class - Mr. Rendine's English 2 - through the 2008-2009 school year to date.

What are your thoughts about English 2 this year? What experiences or people in English have stood out as important for you? What feelings have resulted from your experiences in English?

I'm going to leave this open-ended, so you may take your comments about this class in any direction you choose, on the condition that you focus on what has been most important and meaningful to you as a student in English 2.

Thank you in advance for continuing to help me create a learning environment that is worthwhile for all students. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Be sure you:
  • spell check
  • grammar check
  • write at least 150 words

  1. i think that english this year is a little better than last year its more laid back and not like crowded with vocab back to back like everyday.thats what we had to do in mrs.James class last year. I dont like the fact that we have to read these whack books every book that we read so far have all been WHACK. Why cant we pick what we want to read like have a class poll for books or something. But ugh yea i think that english is pretty much cool this year .........oh and i have maddddddddd friends in here =}

  2. OMG!! Yo English Class 08-09 was sooo bangin. When I first came to this class on the first day of school I was like, this class is gonna be soo boring, but as the year went on I had so much fun. Also in English Class I made many new friends like Tim, Damian, Carl, Dan, Jasmine, Cady, Brandon, Josh Swift & Josh Sonntag, Shyanne and Danielle. The really annoying thing was that we had to change seats every marking period I bet if we got to choose our own seats it would have been better, but come to think of it if we would have never witched seats up I would have met all of these awesome people so I kinda see why we switched the seats up, to get to work with new people and experience working with the whole class.

  3. To tell you the truth, personally, English 2 wasn't that much different than the previous English courses I've taken. English seems to have the same curriculum standards each year: vocab, grammar, and literature. What I liked about this year is grammar was taught moreover than vocab, which I think is more important because, It's not the words you use It's the way there put in a sentence. Vocab is good and dandy but its nothing if It's not used properly in the right context. English Isn't difficult for me at all academically, I just don't completely apply myself in school in general, but that's something I need to work on. I've been in honors english courses before, it's just a matter of staying focused and completing the work.

  4. My English experience this year is probably that it’s an alright class. I really enjoy most of the people in my class and some people were just real easy to become friends with and it benefitted me a lot. When I first came into this class in the beginning of the year my assigned sit was with three girls who were real sweet and easy to work with. This helped me get comfortable in the class. My thoughts about this class though would most likely be fun. I like the project we did on Othello and I thought it was a fun and creative idea. Some of the books we read though could definitely be without. Sometimes I thought days in English tended to drag on and I thought it was kind of boring. When we watched movies I thought it was fun and it was easy to want to pay attention because we could just relax and not worry about getting anything done. Some experiences I learned would be to know why we use literature and how it’s helpful in our lives. I did enjoy this class, my teacher and my classmates for helping me along the way.

  5. This year I learned a lot in English 2. When I was younger I used to like English then I got a few bad teachers and I started to hate it because I couldn’t understand the lessons because of the way they were taught. This year was a lot different I learned a lot. I felt like mostly everything we did was beneficial not just busy work. Also you gave us the opportunity to give suggestions and give you our input on most assignments and lessons. Also we were able to talk while we worked; it didn’t have to be silent. You let us work in small groups or partners a lot which I found to help. I like that we got the chance to do some acting because it was really funny and fun.

  6. I think English 2 is a lot more about literature than grammar and spelling or anything else. I think English 2 taught us how to understand what an author says much more deeply than just reading what he says. We’ve learned to look into how the author portrays a character, and how to read between the lines. I liked how we read the old book Othello, and watched the modern movie of the book called “O”. I liked doing that because you got to compare the characters from the time of Othello acted to the characters in the modern movie. They reacted with different actions, but their emotions were all the same. Also, we’ve done a lot of group work in English 2. The group work has helped get along with different people and learn to work with others easily. I learned how to take bits and pieces from everyone’s ideas and combine it into one. I believe everyone brings something different to the table.

  7. So far this year during english iv had a little fun. I hate reading plays and those kind of books. To me there not enjoyable to read. I had fun doing the skit because it got is to get together and do things as a group and let us interact with the people in our group , giving us the freedom to do what ever we want. Over all this year, during this class some parts have been fun but then other parts could have been funner.

I liked English 2 because I liked the books. my favorite book of the year was Of Mice and Men. Of course there were things that I did not like, like the term paper for example, but i enjoyed the books. The books were short and easy to understand, but not too easy. I don't like long books because they tend to drone on and on, and I stop paying attention to what I am reading. I then forget what I just read and so I lose my place in the book, but that did not happen in the books in English 2. I like high school English because the ideas are more sophisticated and the books are not "happy-go-lucky" stories where every one is happy with a happy ending. The books we read were not so happy and had a darker plot that was not so easy to see without analyzing the book, and even that was not that hard because we would look at a paragraph and talk about it. Overall I liked English 2 except the term paper.

  9. I thought that English two was much better then English one, we read a lot of plays last year that I think at least my class no one really liked. So although we read some plays this year I think that they are not only much easier to read and understand but easier to relate to. I’m not going to say that my experiences were great because it wasn’t. the thing that stood out to me was the project we had to do when we mapped out the route that the kid from A Catcher in the Rye. I’ve never had to be put in the shoes of the character in such a literal sense. Also these blogs are fairly new and defiantly stand out. And I’m not necessarily a fan of everyone in that room. But to those people who I met and became friends with I am glad I did so. Also I feel as a person each experience helps me grow a little more. And for that I am grateful for that. ~eryn k.

  10. I like my English class, ever since I’ve been in Ls reading I’ve wanted to get out of that class into regular ed English. Now that at I’m in the class I’ve felt a lot smarter. I enjoy being challenged to things that I haven’t already learned, like pronouns, noun, and writing term papers. I enjoy getting the opportunity to read 10th grade level books, I feel up to date and feel as smart as my age and grade. In this class we read plays and watch the movie, doing so it helps me understand what I am reading and the point of the story. Getting the chance to act out some of the parts from the play is great to in my old Ls reading class we never did that, and the great thing is that when we did do it I worked well with most of my group and it showed though our group grade. I love being in your class and I wouldn’t want to change for the world

  11. English this year was probably my best year of english in a while. I had a lot of fun and the books we I actually had interest in. You are one of my favorite teachers I have had through out the Jr. High and the senior high so far. I have learned a lot and will probably use it later on in life. This year of english will probably be the most remembering for me.

  12. Well to start off, english is so much fun. We learn our lessons very well, but the way we get involved and ineract with each lesson is what makes everything stick. Mr. Rendine is a very down to earth teacher, he is accepting, and open to seeing the other side of everything before a final decision. The over all atmosphere of the class is very open, and happy. You can't walk into english first period without having a smile on your face. None of my other english classes i have ever been in have been so enjoyable. The books we read are great, the vocab is fun, and the project of acting was even better. i hope next year English class will be just as great thiough im sure nothing can ever top this year.

  13. This year in English 2 I learned a lot of stuff that i could eventually use in my life. I learned so many new words and how to pronounce them, I am expanding my vocabulary after this year. Mr. Rendine has been a great help to my success in English 2 this year even though I haven’t got an A. The way we have learned stuff this year was very interesting and fun unlike previous years and classes. In a weird way English class taught me real life qualities and advice. Like how to manage time and to be organized and that life is defiantly not fair.

  14. English has been good this year. Some of the assignments were kind of confusing at times and a little disorganized, but our class, ended up doing most of them, well at least I did. I’m actually a little nervous for next year for all my subjects. That includes English III. I’m just hoping I do well and pass everything and turn everything in on time. The most important thing from this year, or that I remember the most was Romeo and Juliet. I liked how we watched the older movie of it and the newer movie of it. My feelings about our class this year have been neutral. We had our good times and our bad. :)

  15. I think that English this year has been great! I feel that last year my teacher just taught to get thru the year not to actually understand and teach the kids. Mr. Rendine, you are a wonderful teacher never have I had a teacher seem to care so much about his class and you make learning kind of fun. I love how instead of just reading a boring old book, we get out of the class and make modern skits. That was a really good idea because it made the kids put the book into better perspective. Overall I love this class more than any other. Mr. Rendine rocks!

  16. Within this school year in English 2 it has basically been the exact samething as every other year. We read books that we either love or hate learn a lot of vocab that we never use again and learn a little shakespear. The only real imporantance I found in english this year was the vocab as I always have thought that having a large vocabulary is a good thing to have. I have mixed feelings about english. I hate the parts of speech because I do believe that not everyone will pick apart and anylize every word put into a sentence unless your career path pertains to doing something with english. The one thing I do like about english is the vocab like I had mentioned before. I like to expand my vocabulary rather then using "good" or "bad" all the time. I believe it makes you sound more educated and you know more about what your talking about and can make you a better writter.

  17. This year I really enjoyed English 2. Not just becuase it was my easiest class but because I just really like the subject. Although this year we didn't write that many stories or things that envolved a lot of creativity, i still enjoyed reading the books. My favorite experience in english was the journals because my 8th grade teacher mrs. davis made us do journals too, everyday and it was my favorite part of class. I still have the journal, but i dont know, i just find journals fun. I think overall, my experiences in English 2 were awesome.\

  18. I think that this year in english was o.k. It was fun sometimes, but most of the time it was boring because we had to read, do vocab, or read plays. I was glad to make new friends this year. I kind of liked english better last year when it was more vocab and the books were better. But overall this year was ok in english

  19. I personally have nothing to complain about this year's English II. We read many great playsa and books such as Crucible, Mice and Men, and Othello. I learn many new words and their usage in the class and I am very happy ab out it. Last year in my English honor in different school class was rather taxing and boring, but Mr. Rendine your class was very interesting. I wish to be a teacher who teaches well, but also interact and have student's support not hatred like you. I seen many teachers hated by the students, but your studets enjoies your personality and teaching ways. You are one of my teacher role model.

  20. English class this year for the most part was pretty interesting. I enjoyed most of the books that we read and class and I definitely enjoyed the movies that we watched. As a whole I didn’t really honestly learn much in this class, just a lot of reading. My grammar skills are about the same as they were in elementary school and I don’t think I learned any new vocabulary words. Although we got to do something different by using the blogs to further our understanding and dissecting literature which was pretty cool. I think that school should be more spontaneous like using different methods of learning like the blogs. Hopefully next years English class will be as enjoyable as this one. I think I would have done better in English this year if I didn’t have it 1st period because as you can tell I am definitely not a morning person.

  21. In English 2 this year I have had a lot of fun and also at the same I have learned a lot. I liked your choice of books you chose for us to read and I liked how after we read the books we watched the movie to understand it better. That helped out when it came to taking tests and quizzes on those books. I liked how we did our vocab also because when we had to find and type out the definitions and parts of speech and all that, it helped us remember it better. I like your style of teaching and how you control the class. When teachers are mean and yell they get nowhere but you are nice and get through to. I have no complaints about English this, I hope I can say the same for next.

  22. English class this year was fun as grits fareal. I like how we didnt have too much work to do like everyday. I like how everything was on chill mode and just fun. The thing i dont like about reading class is how we have to read the corniest books ever like we should be able to pick the books tht we want so we can stay focused more and that would probably help us in the long run also.Last year in english it was wayyy to much work tht we had to do and it was very over whelming. This year i didnt really have to stress about things that much unless i was slacking which for the most part i wasnt so this year was great!!!
